Animals of Samburu National Reserve

We found this leopard in a tree. It was very hard to see because it was camouflaged.

This is a beisa oryx - one of the Samburu 'Special 5'. It was the first thing we saw when we got into the park.
This is James our guide. He is a Samburu warrior. He is the person who taught us to fire bows and arrows and throw spears. He is holding Ruth.
On the journey to Samburu we saw Mount Kenya. It had snow on the top even though it is so hot here. Mount Kenya is the second highest mountin Africa.

This is a giraffe in Samburu it is eating the tree it is standing by.It is at reticulated giraffe - one of the Samburu 'Special 5'.
This baboon has a baby on its back. It is walking in long grass with the other baboons.
This is a dik dik. It is a very small deer. They live in twos - partners for life - one dies, the other pines and dies within three or four days.
This is a herd of elephants. There is a male in each herd. When the younger boys are 14 they are kicked out of the herd to find another herd to lead.
These are some elephants crossing the river.
This is a Grevy's zebra. It is one of the Samburu 'Special 5'. It has large, plate shaped, furry ears. It's also bigger than plains zebras. It has thinner stripes too.

Scouts

This is the place where the founder of scouting, Robert Baden-Powell, is buried. It is in a town called Nyeri, and we stopped there on our way back from Samburu.

This is his grave.

Then we went to his old house where there is a museum.

This is inside the museum. There are lots of scout neckerchiefs from all over the world.

On the way home from Nyeri we stopped at Thomson's Falls. They were very big.
Me Sam and Ruth rode on a camel. I didn't like it because it was bumpy, especially when the camel was getting up and down.

12.12.14

It is our Christmas holiday. At the very start we put up our Christmas tree. We have made some decorations to put on the tree.we made stars and candy canes.

On the10th of December we went to samburu national nature reserve for a safari holiday. We are staying in a safari tent. It is very posh. We saw this tortoise on the path behind our tent.

It is called a leopard tortoise.

Our tent has a living room! It has very comfy sofas.

This is my bed. It has a frilly mosquito net with a door. Me and Sam are topping and tailing in this bed. Ruth has her own bed and mummy and daddy have a big bed. nanny and Gan are also with us. They have a tent for two people.

This is the bathroom. It has as shower, toilet and two sinks. The tent has 2 bathrooms, one for mummy and daddy and one for me, Sam and Ruth.

There is a swimming pool at the camp. This is me, Sam and Ruth swimming in it. It is very hot. There is also a kids club where we have been learning to use bows and arrows and spears like Samburu warriors and making Samburu jewellery from beads. My favourite thing was making a bracelet.
Our tent is right by the river. From our tent we have seen elephants, baboons and vervet monkeys. We have been on lots of game drives and seen lots of other animals. I will post photos of those when we get home.

Geckos!

This is a gecko. It is on our wall. It has special suction feet so it can stick to the wall. This one is upside down on the ceiling ! There are lots of geckos in our house but they only come out after it is dark. a geckos eyes are on the side of their head.
This gecko is on the wall. They look a bit weird but we like them because they eat insects and bugs in our house.
They come in and out using these air vents in the wall.

A holiday in Nairobi

At the start of half term we all went to Nairobi to see what was there.

(Daddy apologises for the poor quality photos - he kept forgetting his new camera and only ever had his phone with him!)

First stop after the long drive was Village Market where we looked in shops and had lunch and ice cream.

This is where we stayed, at the Headmaster of Peponi School's house. It was massive! He had a nice dog called Tully and another dog called Diego also came to visit. We ate our meals on the veranda. It was all very nice.  There was also a TV which we watched a lot, even watching Frozen on the movie channel. We did get bitten a lot by mosquitoes.

We went to the elephant orphanage. I stroked one!!

We had lunch at a famous restaurant called The Carnivore. We ate lots of meat, including ostrich and crocodile!

We also visited The Giraffe Centre where we were able to feed giraffe.

This is Edd the giraffe. He was very friendly.

Scout camp trip.

I went on my first scout camp this weekend. This is me with my things I took. It was fun. It was in Nairobi. It was one night long. I slept in a tent with Gloria, Medina and Maria. There were monkeys there. One of them screamed in the night. We went on a long hike. We had a camp fire. The Sparks were funny. We sang lots of songs. We learnt which whistles mean what. We did a treasure hunt today and the prize was mint lollipops. The other group got lots of little sweets for their prize.

My tooth came out!

2 of my teeth have fallen out in Kenya. The tooth fairy still comes but she brings paper money here. She gave me 50 shillings for each tooth.
