A Trip to the Equator

This is a trip to the equator. The two signs mark the equator line. I am in the middle of the two signs. It was an hour north from our house. We live in the Southern Hemisphere.
The equator passes through 10 countries .6 of them are in Africa: Kenya (where we live), Somalia, Uganda, Congo, DRC and Gabon. The other countries are in Asia (Indonesia) and South America (Equador, Brazil, and Colombia).

This is a demonstration of the Coriolis Effect. You had a bowl of water with a stick inside. When you are on the equator the stick does not move around because the water drains straight down. When you are north of the equator the stick turns one way as the water spirals down and when you are south of the equator the stick turns the other way. It was very interesting to watch.

  1. I didn't know the water goes straight down at the equator, that must have been cool to watch! Sophie and Leon like watching a rubber duck spinning round when we pull out the plug after a bath. I'll show them your pictures. Thank you for telling us your stories :)
